The Blurb is the Word

I've been thinking about blurbs lately. Because I need some. And then I've been walking around the house going "blurblurblurblurblurb" because that's kinda fun to say, but that's a different story altogether.

Anyway. Blurbs. Have you ever picked up a book on the strength of a blurb? It's funny, because as a reader, I'm only occasionally influenced by the blurbage. I might pick something up off the shelf on the strength of a really great blurb. But most of the time, nope. I still read them, and I think, "Man, that would be awesome to have a blurb like that from HER." And that's as far as it goes.

But now that I'm actually going to get Ye Olde Book published, I'm a little crazy about the blurbs. Now they have suddenly jumped way up on my importance meter. And I'm thinking these are what I want:

Read BAD TASTE IN BOYS, yo. Or I'll go all Rambo on you.

Read BAD TASTE IN BOYS, or I'll blast you.

Read BAD TASTE IN BOYS, or I will tie you down and give you a makeover.

Read BAD TASTE IN BOYS! And eat your vegetables. Just not THESE vegetables.

Did it work? Are you going to read my book now?

Oh. my. heck!! That last picture is just too freaky! And I've always wanted to read your book -- blurb or not. I'm not sure how important the blurb is to me as a reader, but I get where you're coming from as a writer.

Well I wasn't going to read,...until the last picture. (of course I was totally going to anyway, silly)

Great, now I've got "Blurb, blurb, blurb, the blurb is the word..." going on a loop in my head.

Awesome. Now I'll never forget about your book. Maybe next time you could try some more positive associations? ;)

HOW did they convince that guy to pose like that?>!?!?

AHHHHH!

I'm not a blurb reader either... honestly, if I'm going to pick up a book off a shelf, it's because of the cover :)

Ewwww! That Richard Simmons one is just disturbing! LOL! And in spite of the nightmares I'm sure to have now, I'll still read your book!! :-)

So maybe it would work better if I said, "Read my book, or I'll show you the Richard vegetable picture again"? :)

OMG That image of Richard Simmons has been etched in my brain....too creepy. Now I will shudder any time I see him on TV (as if I didn't shudder before??)
Book- yes, blurb- no!

Gaaahh!

After the R. Simmons pic I'd read anything if you would just make it go away.

Excuse me while I go soak my brain in some Windex (it cures everything right?).

You had me at Hello. You may have lost with the last picture.

Of course I will be buying a copy of your book, or several.

Yeah, blurbs influence me. They hook me in and then I "go in" to see if I actually like the book and the writing.

Blurb or no blurb, I'm reading your book. Period.

AHHH! My eyes!!!!

As soon as I recover, I'm totally reading your book! =)

Ah, Richard...

I'd have to say I have bought books for the blurbs. The cover first, then the blurbs. I'm a dream consumer I suppose, easily swayed.
I hear you with getting anxious for your own live blurbs. Won't disclose here the blurb dreams that've been blurbed into my blurbage lately.

Blurbs are like reccommendations on your colege application. Nothing happens on their strength alone, but if you don't get them you're screwed!

Maybe the book should come with a free brain scrubber? I'll talk to the publicity people and see if I can hook you all up.
